Online dating can be tough. While having access to 100’s of Ottawa singles at the swipe of your finger may seem convenient, the reality is that your potential date also has 100 so-called “options”. So how do you stand out from the crowd and land your date?
Don’t Be Basic. Think outside the box.
1. Play Board Games At The Loft
Not only can you enjoy the cozy, laid back atmosphere to set a casual – yet romantic vibe to your first date but you can also play your favourite board games. Ottawa winters get cold, so the Loft is a perfect date destination for a snowy day when the weather is best enjoyed from indoors. The Loft is a step up from a regular bar or coffee shop because you are pairing it with an interactive activity that adds playful competitiveness to your date. This can also act as a buffer for those inevitable first date awkward pauses. Focus on your next move, on the board and for your date.
Warning: There is such a thing as TOO much competition. Our Advice? Steer clear of Monopoly, unless you want the relationship to end before it even begins.
2. Skate On The Canal & Enjoy A Beavertail
The Rideau Canal is the world’s largest skating rink & many people travel to Ottawa just to skate on it! So why not take advantage of what’s in your own backyard? Not to mention, the canal is free! This is a great way to save money if you’re on a budget, or an opportunity to save your money for drinks afterwards at one of Downtown Ottawa’s bars or restaurants.
The canal is filled with fun activities all winter long & plenty of rest areas to stop for a hot chocolate and a beavertail – an Ottawa classic. Doing a physical activity during a first date gets your heart going & provides that feeling of teamwork when you make it to the next checkpoint along your route. Plus we could all use some more vitamin D during the wintertime, a nice sunny winter day is ideal for a canal date.
3. Parc Omega
If you don’t mind a bit of a drive (about an hour from downtown Ottawa), Parc Omega is a great outdoor activity to do on a winter date. The hour drive provides time for you and your date to get to know each other, let’s just hope you’re willing to stay in a car with them for that long! If you survive the car ride with your date, then there are plenty of things to do once you have arrived. Go on a horse-drawn wagon ride, try snowshoeing through the trails, feed the animals & enjoy some delicious maple taffy.
Parc Omega is a great opportunity to escape from the city and take in the great Canadian outdoors. You can spot a variety of wild animals such as Deer, Elk, Wild Turkeys, Coyotes, Grey Wolves, Caribou, Moose, Musk Ox & Bison.
If your date is adventurous and enjoys the outdoors, Parc Omega is guaranteed to impress.
4. Le Nordik Spa
If you’re looking to crank up the romance level for your date, Le Nordik is a great romantic date idea. Le Nordik is the perfect way to warm up on a winter day by soaking in the hot tubs overlooking the Gatineau hills & relax in the saunas. Le Nordik offers a variety of drink and food options in their lounge.
5. Vineyards Wine Bar
Vineyards is a wine bar in the basement of The Fish Market in the Byward Market. Something about the dim, candlelight ambiance makes Vineyards a cozy atmosphere to escape from the winter weather. Every Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday has a featured live jazz artist performing. Groove to the live music and try a glass of wine off of their award-winning wine menu. Or if you are undecided, order a wine flight to sample 3 different kinds.
Vineyards has it all, entertainment, great food & drink menu and an atmosphere that you can easily get to know your date.
